How to recover a dead Pioneer player using a serial cable
This guide is for people who have had bad luck when trying to update their DivX player based on the MTK 1389 Chipset.
When you have flashed wrong, the player is locked (dead), the VFD display can show strange characters and won´t
respond to any commands. If your player is OK and you want to make the upgrade in the usual way using a CD, go to firmware page.
Dont worry! After you have the all needed tools, your player will be back alive in a few minutes.
Dont know how to build the cable? Contact me at dead Player
and we might work something out!
I also have replacement PCB cards for some players! Contact me for more information!
!!! Please follow this manual carefully, step-by-step !!!
!!! Otherwise you may encounter ssome problems !!!
1. Build the serial data cable.
One of the best, working cables is made as follows:
In the real world it looks like this:(click for bigger pic)
You may also use a Serial Data Cable from a mobile phone on this list::
You can find more cables schematics HERE.
2. Get the tools that you need!
These programs do not work under Windows 7
You only need one of the II, III, IV or V, not all off them!
- MTK Remaker
- MTK Tool 1.31
- MTKFlasher
- MTKCom 0.0.2.5
- MTKTool 2.45.03
3. Player to PC connection
If you use mobile phone data cable, try to open the mobile connector from the serial data cable (nice if it is possible to cut the cable from inside the mobile contact). If you can´t, just cut the cable 5 cm from the mobile connector. Look at the picture with the cable connectors for your model and at the colors of your cut cable, to find which wires are for GND, TX, RX, V+.
Power OFF the player using the big button on the front of the player. Unplug the cable from the socket. If you are lucky, you can open the player without breaking the factory seals, but that depends on the player you have. For easy removal, you can use a lighter to warm the seal and then remove it. If you break the seals, you lose the warranty. (In fact, you loose warranty, any way : )
Use the screwdriver to remove the screws and then the player cover. Now you need to find serial port on mother board. It is always located not far from flash memory chip, and may look like at the pictures below:
Now solder the cable to proper pins. You may solder a socket, as it is on the picture above, or each wires directly to main board. It is highly recommended, that you have some experiences in precise soldering. Serial port is very small and it is easy to damage it.
You may also use connection, shown on picture below:
Contact was made with disassembled contactor.
4. Firmware
Open MTK Remaker and load the correct upgrade file for your player. Without doing anything to the loaded .bin file, save it from File > Save Serial > upgrade.bin. If you want to have the option for saving a .bin file as serial, go in MTK Remaker to Help > About > double click "Unleash the power of MT 13x9" > Choose "Enable Expert Mode". Do not reopen the saved file in MTK Remaker again. The saved file is already good for serial backup. Open MTKTool and go to Bin file > Browse > and load the saved upgrade.bin file.
Sometimes MTKRemaker is not fully compatible with Pioneer firmwares. If you notice, that "Save Serial" is not accessible, just use the .bin file as it is. Or find firmware, that was saved from the player and not processed, to fit CD Upgrade method.
5. Upgrading
Connect the data cable to your PC. THEN plug player´s power cable back into the wall socket. Be sure that the power button on the front of the player is on the OFF position.
Be sure that first you plug in the player with PC, then connect power cord into the player !
You may leave the window "Verify" marked, but if you have any problems with Flash memory verifying, unmark it. (see picture below)
Press the Upgrade button from MTK Tool:
From now, your PC will communicate with your player and start upgrading:
The process will continue for about 2 minutes and you NEED to keep a perfect and firm contact to the main
board until you see 100% in MTKTool. When you see 100% completed you can disconnect the player.
Power ON the player and this should be alive again.
If the upgrade fails, try again until it succeeds.
Enjoy Your movies, Your music, Your Life !
